While St. Patrick’s Day is always a big time to party and with Halloween not far away, it’s easy to overlook the honored tradition of Oktoberfest in Vancouver.
I mean, it might not be as widely celebrated as St. Patty’s Day, but Oktoberfest is still a fun excuse to party every fall. Replace the green beer with weissbier, funny hats with lederhosen and rowdy sing-alongs with…well, no. That pretty much stays the same.
There are quite a few awesome Vancouver Oktoberfest events, whether you want to drink the best beers from Bavaria, stuff your face with sausage (pause) or slapdance a ho.
So if you’re looking to celebrate Oktoberfest in Vancouver this year, here’s a list of pretty cool parties to do exactly that. Note that many Vancouver Oktoberfest events are 19+. Don’t forget your ID’s, kids.
Steam Whistle Oktoberfest at Vancouver Alpen Club
Steam Whistle’s Oktoberfest party is coming to Vancouver for the first time ever at the Vancouver Alpen Club this September 28. Party with hundreds of people and stuff your face with traditional German food, enjoy music and entertainment and down as much Steam Whistle pilsner as possible without getting cut off. Come dressed in costume (e.g., lederhosen) for your chance to win prizes. Check here for more information on the Steam Whistle Oktoberfest party at the Vancouver Alpen Club.
Oktoberfest at The Portside Pub
The Portside Pub will be throwing the biggest sausage-stuffing Oktoberfest party in Gastown featuring the Erdinger tap takeover and other German wheat beers. There will be sausages on the menu as well as a live oom-pah band in the house.
Port Alberni (Vancouver Island)
The 40th annual Oktoberfest is going down Port Alberni’s Europa Club. This is the biggest annual Oktoberfest celebration on Vancouver Island and it’ll be going down on October 18 and 19 this year. There will be live music, dancing, and yup, lots of beer. Check out more information here.
Fraser Valley Food Show 2013 (Abbotsford)
Now in its sixth year, the Fraser Valley Food Show is happening this October 4 – 6 in Abbotsford. For the second year in a row, the event will include the Great Canadaian Sausage Making Competition in celebration of Oktoberfest, which will determine who makes the best sausage in the land. The competition will take place on October 5 and will include over 100 sausage entries in 12 different categories. The first 500 visitors will get to sample them with a glass of Erdinger for a participation fee of just $2. Tasting begins at 11:30am, so get there on time! Get full information here.
Surrey Museum (Surrey)
Sorry, there’s no booze served at this all-ages event. But the Surrey Museum is celebrating Oktoberfest every Saturday starting last week up until September 21. Enjoy samples of traditional Bavarian food including warm pretzels and apple cider, learn a bit of German and dance to live polka music. Cost of admission is your choice of donation.
