Toronto costume stores pop up all over the city in time for Halloween each year, so if you haven’t gotten your costume yet, you best get on it!
There’s still time to get out there if you’ve been slacking on your costume - but not a lot. Halloween weekend kicks off this Friday and there’s nothing worse than trying to piece together a costume made from the scattered leftovers of what no one else wanted.
There are lots of pop-up shops in the city as well as year-round costume stores in Toronto. Avoiding the crowds isn’t really going to be an option, so expect any of the locations listed below to be busy. My advice is to get out there early on a weekday if you can. Evenings will be a lot crazier.
Where to Buy Halloween Costumes in Toronto
Below is a list of costume and party stores in Toronto. They've got lots of amazing costumes for sale and for rent (while they last) and I'm sure some costumes to maybe avoid this year. Check out our complete list of Toronto Halloween costume shops for even more locations throughout the GTA as well as our Toronto Halloween Parties section for a bunch of events to wear your sweet new costume.
Have you visited any of the following costume stores in Toronto? Share this post to let people know which places you'd recommend.
Malabar has been around since 1923, making it the oldest costume store in Toronto still in operation. They also offer dancewear and makeup year-round and supply lots of local theatre productions. During Halloween, Malabar is one of the most popular costume shops in Downtown Toronto, located on McCaul Street near Queen and University. They also offer Toronto costume rentals if you don’t want to buy one.
Get ready for madness at this massive costume warehouse if you’re looking for a costume shortly before Halloween. This place is insane as people come looking for a Halloween outfit. Security is out front directing traffic in the tight industrial area, a lineup forms at the front door as guards slowly let people in as others come out to regulate capacity. Once you’re inside, the Amazing Party & Costume store becomes more of a place to wander around and check out the horrific displays than a Toronto costume shop to actually purchase anything. Still, this place has everything you need to create whatever costume you have in mind, and is just as good for finding new ideas if you go in with no idea what you’ll be this year.
Exile is your Toronto Halloween and costume party outfitters, with two locations in Kensington Market. This is one of the most legendary vintage shops in Toronto where pretty much everything is second-hand, but during Halloween they stock up on costumes, wigs and accessories. If you’ve already got a costume in mind and need to find certain items, this is a good spot to find all sorts of random crap. If you don’t have an idea yet, this place is just as good for some inspirational wandering.
Candy’s has a huge selection of costumes and is open all-year for all your costume needs. These guys are pros and all products shown on their website can also be found in-store, so you can browse their selection before heading over. Depending on how quickly you need your costume, you can also get anything shipped directly to you (fees apply).
It’s My Party on the Danforth is a year-round party store that goes all-out for Halloween with costumes, masks, decorations, and everything you need. I’m not sure how well their website is updated, so you’ll need to go in to really see what they’ve got in store. But they’ve always got lots of costumes in stock and a nice selection every year for Halloween in Toronto.
Theatrix has been in Toronto since 1965 and at its current Geary Avenue location since 2008. Theatrix was recently featured on Breakfast Television and will be creating costumes for the anchors on their Halloween show next Thursday. They’ve got over 50,000 costumes, wigs and accessories including thousands of stage-quality costumes in stock. So whether you want to buy a costume or rent one, they’ll hook you up.
Creepers has four current locations in the Greater Toronto Area including Mississauga, Brampton and one Toronto location inside Dufferin Mall. If you visited last year, they’ve moved from downstairs to the main hallway next to the Foot Locker. Creepers has been popping up in October for the past ten years throughout the GTA, where customers can find thousands of costumes, accessories and Halloween decorations.
Spirit Halloween has several locations in Toronto and Mississauga including their North York pop-up shop this year, located on Weston Road right off the 401. All locations are open weekdays ‘til 8pm, Satudays ‘til 6pm and Sundays ‘til 5pm. They’ve got everything you could possibly need as far as Halloween costumes and decorations in the Toronto area.
