Canada’s celebrating its 146th birthday this year and if you’re not going up north to set off fireworks, hit the beach and drink like a true Canuck for the long weekend, don’t worry about it.
Here’s a rundown of just a few amazing events happening in Toronto this Canada Day long weekend.
Friday, June 28th
Ribfest kicks off on Friday at Centennial Park and runs 'til the end of Canada Day. A total of 16 award-winning ribbers from Canada and the States will be setting up shop and serving fall-off-the-bone ribs, BBQ chicken, pulled pork and more. This year will also focus on offering a lot of different types of food including Halal, Indian cuisine, Caribbean food, stone oven pizzas, and more.
Argos Home Opener
The Toronto Argonauts will be hosting rivals Hamilton Tiger-Cats in their 140th home opener to kick off Canada Day Long weekend inside the Rogers Centre. In case you forgot, the Argos are the current Grey Cup champs, pretty much making them the most legit pro sports team in the city.
Sydney Blu at Footwork
Ontario’s own Sydney Blu returns home for a live performance inside Footwork along with Deko-ze, Jonathan Rose and Ticky Ty. Last call will be extended ‘til 4am in celebration of Pride.
Just Blaze at The Hoxton
Hip-hop fans won’t be unfamiliar with this dude who has produced monster tracks for everyone from Jay-Z to Eminem, Lil Wayne, Fabolous, DMX, and T.I. Lately he’s become more popular for his EDM-fused trap music and collaborations with the likes of Baauer, and he’ll be performing live inside The Hoxton along with ComeBackSeason DJ’s Xander Gatien and Rook.
Saturday, June 29th
Digital Dreams makes its return to The Flats at Ontario Place this Canada Day long weekend featuring two days of EDM on Saturday and Sunday. 50 DJ’s will perform over the course of the weekend with Tiesto closing out the party on Sunday night.
Markus Schulz at Guvernment
The German trance DJ and producer will be in Toronto as part of his current world tour with a live solo set at Guvernment. Doors open at 10pm, so you’ve got time to head to Guv after the first night of Digital Dreams comes to an end at midnight.
Digital Dreams Afterparty at The Hoxton
The Hoxton will be hosting a party after the event wraps up with a secret special guest headliner. The party starts at 10pm and tickets are already on sale. Knowing The Hoxton, this definitely isn't going to let anyone down. It’s also being put on by Electronic Nation, so it'll most likely be a major performer at Digital Dreams.
Sunday, June 30th
Benny Benassi at Guvernment
Benny Benassi will be at Guvernment if you’ve got enough in you to keep partying after Tiesto shuts down Digital Dreams on Sunday. Cazzette, Mark Oliver and Manzone & Strong will be warming things up earlier in the evening.
Elite Part 23 Red & White Edition
If EDM isn’t your thing, the ultimate hip-hop party of the weekend is the Elite Part 23 Red & White Edition boat cruise aboard the Empress of Canada. T-Dot’s hottest DJ’s will be performing on two decks including Starting From Scratch, 4Korners, Kid Kut and more. Check out the most amazing view of the fireworks from the water and be sure to dress in red and white for the event!
33rd Annual Pride Parade
There's a little thing happening in the city called Pride Toronto, with events happening all week long. But it all culminates on Sunday with the 2013 Pride Parade starting at 2pm at Bloor and Church, heading east on Bloor and south down Yonge. This year's theme is SUPERQUEER.
Monday, July 1st
Electric Island – Canada Day Edition
If you experienced Electric Island on Victoria Day, you’ll be happy to know the second edition is coming to Centre Island this Canada Day. Get ready for over nine hours of music by Sasha, Guy Gerber, Audiofly and more as we celebrate our nation’s birthday beginning at 1pm.
Jays vs. Tigers
Jays games in Toronto are a Canada Day tradition. They return home from Boston on July 1st to kick off their series against Detroit at 1:07pm. Get your tickets in advance – the Rogers Centre pretty much sells out every Canada Day…even if this season isn’t exactly turning out the way we’d hoped.
The Times Canada Day Boat Cruise
The Times annual boat cruise happens every Canada Day on the shores of Lake Ontario. Join the celebration with hundreds of other partygoers aboard The Rive Gambler yacht for an afternoon cruise with amazing views of the city from the water and music by DJ Ritz, Cyruss Sanchez and Last Boyscouts.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Echo Beach
New York City threesome the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will be at Echo Beach for their Canada Day concert along with openers Maximum Headroom.
