It’s official…the Toronto Maple Leafs are set to play at the 2013 Winter Classic against the Red Wings in Detroit!
It was pretty much a sure thing when the NHL announced there would be a press conference about it earlier this month, but it wasn’t ‘til this morning when they officially gave it the green light.
The match will be held at “The Big House” Michigan Stadium and is expected to set a new record for the highest attendance ever at an NHL match. The current record is over 71,000 people at the 2008 NHL Winter Classic between the Sabres and Penguins. The 2013 Winter Classic is expected to pack in nearly 110,000 hockey fans.
We’re willing to bet there will be a nice mix of red and blue jerseys in the crowd as dedicated Leafers hop the border to be there.
If you want to be there to witness two of the original six duke it out and make history on New Year’s Day, be sure to order your tickets as soon as they become available. No word as of yet when that’ll be.
